Fall Activities at Driftwood Resort

Whether you’re looking for a weekend escape, a look at the fall colors and wildlife or an opportunity to do some hunting and fishing, Driftwood Resort offers great fall getaways to fit every budget and activity. We are located in Northern Minnesota on Sand Lake in the Chippewa National Forest.  Outstanding fall color throughout the area makes driving tours a favorite fall activity, while our pontoon and boat rentals offer the perfect opportunity to view fall colors and plentiful wildlife while cruising Sand Lake’s crystal clear blue waters.  These opportunities, plus the close and easy access to miles of open hiking and hunting trails, provide a convenient and spectacular North Woods Experience – all while staying in one of our cozy cabins.

Great Fall Colors & Wildlife!
Located in the Heart of the Chippewa National Forest, Driftwood offers great opportunities to view all that the north woods has to offer. The Chippewa National Forest is rich in bird and other wildlife viewing. Don't be surprised to see an eagle soar over your car, a grouse wander across the road, or see loons alongside your boat. Sand Lake has an abundance of whitetail deer, ducks, beavers, otters, loons and an occasional timber wolf. With over half the lake located in state or federally-protected forest, there's hundreds of acres of untamed wilderness to explore. If you're looking for hiking, walking or biking trails, opportunities exist very close to Driftwood – most notable are the Suomi Hills area and the Joyce Estates. The Fall Color Tour historically begins in mid September and lasts until the beginning of October and is one of the most amazing sights of the north woods. Watch the many different species of trees turn their leaves spectacular hues of yellow, orange, red, and all the colors in between, in preparation for the long winter ahead.

Romantic Getaway Anyone?

Fall is one of the best times to take a romantic getaway. Our cozy cabins offer plenty of privacy, serenity and seclusion as well as romantic lake views. Enjoy a quiet relaxing tour of Sand Lake on a pontoon or, if you are looking for the perfect day trip, a drive up The Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway and a walk thru the Suomi Hills are a must.  State Highway 38 between Grand Rapids and Bigfork, designated  a National Scenic Byway in 1968, winds through 47 miles of breathtaking fall colors and crystal clear blue lakes while several turnouts provide access to hiking trails, historic sites and the Chippewa Fall Color Tour. Some points of interest include the Joyce Estates, a 1930 circa estate accessible only by foot, and the Suomi Hills Recreation Area, a wonderful hiking and biking trail, and the Laurentian Divide.

Fishing & Hunting, Minnesota's Best
The area around Driftwood boasts thousands of acres of state and federal land open for hunting. Bear, grouse, deer, ducks, and geese are the most popular game.Fall Fishing - Driftwood Resort We welcome and encourage you to bring your favorite hunting dog this fall and try our grouse and duck hunting. With hundreds of acres of state and federal land and several small secluded lakes within only a few miles, Driftwood offers a great base of operations, modern cabins and great rates.

Minnesota is the top ruffed grouse-producing state in the United States. No other state harvests as many ruffed grouse each fall or provides as much public hunting land containing ruffed grouse. The ruffed grouse is a native woodland bird about the size of a small chicken. The bird is noted for its fan-shaped tail marked by a broad, dark band. Some ruffed grouse, called red-phased birds, have chestnut-colored tails while the gray-phased birds have gray or slate-colored tails. The bird also has a concealed neck ruff that the male puffs out during courtship displays.

Fall fishing is excellent on Sand Lake as walleye and northern pike are out in force gorging themselves to prepare for the coming long winter.  With over 4,000 acres of prime fishing waters and access to six other lakes, Sand Lake offers the perfect fishing trip. Well known as one of the best walleye lakes in Northern Minnesota, Sand Lake will provide the fall fishing trip you've been looking for.  The walleye is Minnesota‘s most sought-after fish for it‘s great tasting fillets and elusive behavior. Whether you're an experienced Walleye Fisherman or trying your luck for the first time, you'll love hunting the deep holes and sand bars of Sand Lake for the elusive walleye. Bring your own boat or rent one of ours; Driftwood offers several boat and motor combinations.  We also offer a large well kept fish cleaning house.
